Guidelines for Re-opening Churches ~ June 5, 2020

June 5, 2020

Rev. Edward F. Heintzelman, Pastor ~St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Mays Landing, New Jersey

Guidelines for Re-opening our Church

Beginning Tuesday, June 9, 2020, weekday mass will resume in the main church at 7:00 am.

Beginning the weekend of June 13/14, 2020, weekend masses will resume in the main church at 5:00 pm, 8:00 am and 10:45 am. The 10:45 am mass will also be live steamed as we have done the past month.

At this time, St. Bernard Church, Dorothy will not be open for mass.

With that in mind, here are the following guidelines for celebrating Mass in the church. Listed are the Diocesan Guidelines in black type and listed in bold blue type are added instructions for our Church.

Most important for everyone to remember is:

Those who are at high risk for contracting COVID-19 to stay home. The elderly and families with young children (who may find it difficult to maintain a six-foot distance from others) are encouraged to stay home.

And, on any given day when you have a cough or feel sick, please do not come to participate at Mass or visit the church for any ceremony.

*In the Diocese of Camden parishes may reopen for the celebration of weekday Masses on Tuesday, June 9th with a limit of 10 persons in attendance.

Since the chapel will not be open for Mass, we will allow the usual number of persons who attend daily mass to be present in the main church. Please adhere to all signage regarding entering and exiting, also, wearing masks and social distancing are required. Communion will be distributed at the end of mass.  There is to be no gathering after mass, please leave the building immediately after Communion.

The faithful should remove any face coverings before coming forward for Holy Communion or as they approach the minister – the minister should not be made to wait for the communicant to remove his or her face covering.

At this time, Communion will be distributed in hand only.

*On Saturday, June 13th that limit will rise to 30% of the church building’s capacity. This pertains to our weekend masses, and means 120 persons may attend mass in person. The 10:45 am will continue to be available on Facebook. The Chapel will not be open. Please adhere to all signage regarding entering and exiting, also, wearing masks and social distancing are required. Communion will be distributed after mass. There is to be no gathering after mass, please leave the building immediately after Communion.

The dispensation for the faithful from the obligation to participate in Mass on Sundays and Holy Days remain in effect.

All Catholics in the Diocese of Camden are likewise dispensed from the requirement to make their Easter Duty this year.

Hymnals, missalettes and other materials generally left in the pews must be removed.

Members of a single household do not need to practice physical distancing with each other and so may sit together in the same row.

As we begin to celebrate Mass in Church, you will notice the following as you enter the Church, here at St. Vincent’s:

  • Entrance signs and Exit signs.
  • Certain pews will be blocked off – to help maintain distancing.
  • Tape on the floor to guide us in maintaining the 6 feet social distancing.
  • The Knights of Columbus and Ushers will be present to assist our parishioners in finding a seat as well as guiding all through this process of worshipping together at Mass.

Dismissing the congregation by rows at the end of Mass to avoid crowding at the exits.

RESTROOM USE: these facilities are for emergency use only given that they cannot be cleaned properly after each use. We encourage everyone to use the bathroom at home BEFORE you come to church. We ask that you do not send your child/children into the restrooms during mass.

The offertory procession (bringing up the gifts) is to be omitted, as well as the sign of peace.

Special provision should be made for the collection baskets, collection baskets are not to be passed from person to person.

Collection baskets are placed on a table by the middle two doors of church for church offering envelopes.

The faithful should remove any face coverings before coming forward for Holy Communion or as they approach the minister – the minister should not be made to wait for the communicant to remove his or her face covering.

At this time, Communion will be distributed in hand only.

Beginning on Saturday, June 13th the following protocols go into effect:

Sacrament of Baptism for Infants - Baptism is to be celebrated for one child at a time with the exception of twins or multiple children in the same immediate family, keeping in mind the requirements for physical distancing. Only the parents of the child may approach the font with the priest or deacon for actual baptism.

Easter Sacraments (RCIA) – the baptism and/or reception into full communion of those who were prepared for the Easter Vigil is postponed until the Fall. Bishop Sullivan’s Office will provide further information about a suitable date or dates for these celebrations.

Sacrament of Confirmation – The Celebration of Confirmation will not take place until Fall.

Celebration of First Holy Communion – Pastors may celebrate First Holy Communions but must observe all of the protocols in place (including the occupancy limits of the Church).         St. Vincent de Paul Parish families will be notified as to when we will begin the celebration of First Communion.

Sacrament of Matrimony – Pastors may celebrate weddings in accord with the protocols in place for the celebration of Mass.

Sacrament of Penance – all current precautions and protocols regarding the celebration of Sacrament of Penance will remain in place.   With the social distancing restrictions, we are not able at this time.

Funerals – Pastors may celebrate funeral Masses in the parish church as long as all protocols for physical distancing are applied. Funeral directors will need to explain the limits on the number of people who may be in attendance and the requirement that they wear masks. All attendees are to be seated BEFORE the liturgy begins. The presider alone may conduct the rituals at the doors of the church prior to the entrance procession. If Mass is celebrated, Holy Communion is to be distributed at the conclusion of Mass and after the prayers of Final Commendation. The faithful are to then proceed directly to their cars.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick – all current precautions and protocols remain in place. With the restrictions of entering hospitals and social distancing we are not able  at this time.

Remember each other in our prayers and those in need, and a swift end to the Coronavirus.
